КОНТРОЛЬНАЯ РАБОТА ПО АНГЛИЙСКОМУ ЯЗЫКУ В 11 КЛАССЕ

(базовый уровень)

(III четверть 2011-2012 учебного года)

Space Tourism

Many people still think that to get the chance to go to space you’ve got to try to be an astronaut. Unfortunately, the chance of becoming a government astronaut is very small, simply because there are so few – and there’s no prospect of a lot more being employed.

However, don’t despair. Far more people will go to space as visitors. But it will be expensive, so you had better start saving your money. The price of a return space flight to Earth may drop from what it costs now, but estimates vary. The target of the Space Tourism Study Program of the Japanese Rocket Society is to bring the price down to about 1 million yen (about US $10,000), on a turnover of about 1 million passengers per year. However, the demand is expected to be so strong that in the early stages prices will be considerably higher – perhaps 5 million yen ($50,000). As the number of vehicles grows, the number of flights will increase, and prices will fall to 2 million yen over 5–10 years, and then to 1 million yen if possible.

We know that most people would like to stay in orbit for a few days more. And this stands to reason, if you are paying $20,000 for your trip to orbit! So in order for space tourism to reach its full potential, there’s going to be a need for orbital accommodation – or space hotels. These will grow through phases, starting with “lodges” for up to about 100 guests, growing to true hotels of several hundred guests, and eventually to orbiting “theme parks” for many thousands of guests.

Why would a space hotel actually be liked to visit? Hotels in orbit will offer the services you expect from a hotel: private rooms, meals, bars. But they’ll also offer fantastic views of Earth and space and the endless entertainment of space-walking. A trip to a hotel will start with launch in to orbit, which takes about five minutes of powered acceleration followed by up to a few hours of weightlessness approaching the hotel (depending on the flight schedule). Docking will be rather like an airliner parking at an airport – but you’ll leave the cabin floating in 0-G (zero gravity) along the access tube, holding onto a cable with your hands!

Of course all good things have to come to an end, unfortunately. And so after a few days you’ll find yourself heading back through the docking point to the returning vehicle – though you’ll be much more expert at maneuvering in zero-G than you were when you arrived! You’ll be thinking how soon you can save up enough to get back up again – or maybe you should change jobs to go to work in an orbiting hotel!

1.At this progressive school, administrators don't believe in giving grades, preschoolers perform operas and teachers are called by their first names. As such, it's been a destination for artistic kids since 1965. For the privileged children of stars in this learning environment, freedom of thought is important. "Most children are very creative", says head of the high school. Seniors design their own timetable based on theatrical likes.

2.It's a small bistro with wooden tables and comfortable leather sofas. There is also a garden in the back with a large covered patio. Being there feels like being in a country house. We shared the mixed berries and cream. The blueberries were fresh and the cream was delicious and rich, but the strawberries were overripe. Overall rating is two out of five.

3.Don't question your own authority – just make sure that you exercise it. No one is going to give you a green light. You have to assume the position and then people will listen. You may not be committed to the cause, but it is your duty to initiate it.

4. It wasn't the best of weeks. The weather was hot, the children were in post-holiday mode, test-marking piles were mounting, reports, a class assembly was approaching, and I was being filmed for a TV programme about schools.

5.London is not the only city in the UK producing tomorrow's stars. Those in search of talent outside the capital need look no further than New Designers, an annual showcase of British art college graduates, which is held in London's Islington each summer, drawing crowds of private buyers as well as retailers, architects, interior designers and manufacturers.

A. Dear Ann,
How are you? I can’t wait till you finish your course and return home. I have had no one to talk my problems over with since you left. That’s why I’m writing. I need your advice. The problem has to do with my parents again.

B. Another problem is that they think I’m too young to go out alone with my friends. Don’t they realize I’ve grown up? What should I do to make them understand?

C. You remember that they are members of a gardening club, don’t you? Well anyway, this club organizes a dance for its members and their families every month. My parents always insist that I go along with them.

D. I feel helpless. If you were me, would you just ignore them and do what ever you wanted to? I’m anxiously waiting for your reply.
Yours,
Sandra

E. I can’t tell you how boring it is to watch all the “oldies” dance. There are some other children that go there, but that’s exactly what they are – children. I’ve told my parents I don’t like going to these dances, but they don’t take me seriously.

6.Built by King Leopold at the turn of the 20th century, this imposing villa has been recently restored to its past glory. A former Belgian embassy, it offers a rich history and elegance. It had views of the sea and mountains. A large terrace and heated swimming pool offer space for entertaining and enjoying the views. The villa features 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and an impressive marble shower and steam rooms. The price is 4,900,000 Euro.

7. The house was built in the 1950. I doubled the size of it when I moved in. The kitchen was more of a family kitchen, so I extended it. I also built a new bedroom and another room above the garage. I've lived here for about seven years. It was an architect and a few great interior designers, too – I change my style a lot.

A. So Great Britain and France were fighting for control of Canada until 1763. As a result, France signed a treaty giving up all its claims to land on the continent of North America. The French who were living in Canada did not return to France. They continued to follow the customs and religion of their native land. They became ‘French Canadians’.

B. Later, in 1534 the French king commissioned Jacques Cartier to find a water route to the Far East. Cartier made several voyages to the new World, and he tried to establish a colony on the banks of the St. Lawrence River (where Montreal is located today) but he failed. In 1608 Samuel de Champlain built the first permanent French settlement in Canada. He named it Quebec.

C. Since that time, millions of immigrants from the United States, Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Russia, Poland, Scandinavia, and other countries of the world have moved to Canada. Today about one third of the Canadians speak French and about two thirds speak English. English and French are both official languages of Canada.

D. Long before Europeans first came to America, many groups of Indians lived there. They hunted forest animals for food and clothing. They gathered berries and nuts in the forests. Many groups fished in the rivers and streams that flowed through the forests.

E. Both nations began to expand in the New World. English colonists began to settle along the Atlantic Coast. The French began to explore and build forts in the region south of the Great Lakes in the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
