Syntax №1.

The subject of syntax. Minor and Major Syntax. Principle differences between the Phrase and the Sentence.

The subject matter of syntax. The basic syntactic notions: the phrase, the sentence, the suprasegmental construction. Their definitions. The notions of minor and major syntax. The phrase and the sentence. Essential differences.

1. The problem referring to the domains is numerous, that’s why it’s not an easy task to give detailed description of a subject matter. According to Pr. Смирнитский syntax is a part of grammar which is concerned with the rules lying in the basis of word combinations on the one and the rules governing the construction of sentences on the other.

Pr. Смирнитский opinion on the matter in question is shared by the majority of home and foreign scholars. Pr. Illish writes that with the domain of syntax two levels are distinguished that of phrases and that of sentences. To the level of phrases or the phrasemic level coming after the lexemic level belong combinations of 2 or more words. These combinations like separate words have a nominative function. But they represent the referent of nomination as a complicated phenomenon: be it a concrete thing, an action, a quality or a whole situation.

* A picturesque village, to start with a jerk, extremely difficult, the unexpected arrival of the chief.

The grammatical description of phrases is sometimes called “miner syntax” in distinction from “major syntax” studying the sentence and its textual connections. Above the phrasemic level lays the level of sentences or proposimic level (proposicio – предложение, суждение). The peculiar character of the sentence proposeme as a significant unit of language consists in the fact that naming a certain situation or situational event it expresses predication that shows the relation of the denotive event to reality, namely it shows whether this event is real or unreal, desirable or obligatory, stated as truth or asked about etc. In this sense as different from the word and the phrase the sentence is a predicative unit. The sentence is produced by the speaker in the process of speech as a concrete situationally bound utterance. At the same time it enters the system of language but its syntactic pattern, but the sentence is not the highest unit of language in the hierarchy of levels. Above the proposimic level there is still another one namely the level of sentence groups “suprasentential constructions” (надпредложенческие конструкции) by various linguists the highest units of language are called a complex syntactic unity (сложное синтаксическое целое), а supa – phrasal unity (СФЕ), the highest syntactic unit and so on. The supa-sententioal construction is a combination of separate sentences forming a textual unity. Such combinations are subject to regular lingual patterning making them into syntactic element. So making into account the latest scientific data it appears reasonable to broaden the subject matter of syntax.

Syntax may be defined as a branch of grammar which studies syntagmatic relations of words within a sentence, the sentence as a communicative unit, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations between sentences.

2. The basic syntagmatic notions are the phrase and the sentence. The principal differences between them may be reduced to the following points:

1) The phrase is a means of naming some phenomenon or process, each component of a phrase can undergo grammatical changes in accordance with grammatical category represented in it without destroying the identity of a phrase.

*writes letters, would write.

The sentence is a unit of speech, every word of which has its definite grammatical form. A change in a form of words would produce a new sentence.

2) The phrase as such has no intonation where it is one of the most important features of the sentence. The inherent feature of the sentence according to academician Виноградов predication is a syntactic category which expresses reference of the contents of the sentence to reality. It is primarily manifested in the system of verbal grammatical categories such as mood, tense, person. The sentence may represent an action as true to fact or desirable.

*It is true. If it were true

Predication refers a sentence or an utterance to a definite moment of time.

*he lives here, he lived here, he will live here.

Predication also contains indication as to the way the action refers to the persons who participate in the act of communication. In verbless sentences predication is expressed by means of intonation.
